Coniston - Black Edition

  • Limited Edition of 500 pcs

It may look like the Black Edition is just a recolouring of the Coniston, but you’d be mistaken, for we've changed a number of elements that make up this unique edition. The colourway is classic Black Edition - with the subtly textured black dial and chapter ring, adorned with that warm, vintage gold-tan printing. We have changed the scale of the bezel from 24hr to 60 second/minute - something a little different.

The hour blocks are polished and the hands are all vertically brushed to give a subtle texture shift between these crucial elements. The lume has changed from blue to green, and the final little flourish is probably the most subtle of them all; the Black Edition printing at 6 o’clock is finished in a clear varnish over the matte dial surface, making the designation reflect at certain angles whilst remaining invisible at others.

A Visual Spectacle

The Black Edition follows the same path as the Coniston range before - with one unique difference - for the first time in the collection we’ve finished the Miyota 8N33 movement in nickel, rather than gold. We’ve also retained the clever magnifying technique so the movement feels so close that you could reach down and touch it.

In somewhat of a departure for us, and for the first time ever, surrounding this visual spectacle is a saying very close to our hearts. It has been with us since the very start and still rings true to this day, and it keeps our various compasses aligned and true. So what better phrase to adorn the back of this unique watch than our very own:

To the future and whatever it may hold"

Special Edition

The Black Edition has become a very special, limited edition model, in several of our collections. It all started with the Haskell Black Edition, inspired by the Terra Nova expedition to conquer the South Pole, and in turn the Morar Black Edition. The colourway has remained the same throughout, inspired by the black, gold and white colouring of the Terra Nova ship - which carried Captain Scott and his men to the Antarctic.

The Beating Heart

For the Coniston we specified the Japanese Made Miyota 8N33 manual movement, and never looked back. A striking beauty, with a skeletonised frame revealing the inner workings of the movement, from the escapement wheel to the mainspring barrel, it’s all there on show.

Not only is the 8N33 a beautiful caliber to look at, it’s also exceptionally reliable and accurate. The movement beats at 21,600bph, giving an incredibly smooth sweep to the central seconds hand, as it tracks its way around the dial.

The Devil's in the Detail

The Coniston Black Edition is designed to be worn every day. The case is sized at 40mm which, coupled with the edge-to-edge dial, wears small but reads big. The dial takes design cues from all of our preceding watches, bringing them together to form a cohesive and striking dial, filled with dynamic level changes, angles and depth.

Numbers with Meaning

The Coniston Black Edition comes engraved with sequential numbering, so you know exactly which Coniston you have. You can either select your number above, or if you would like to enquire into a specific number please don't hesitate to ask.

Fear of the Dark

When night sets in and the ambient light falls, telling the time becomes challenging. The Coniston range uses a luminous moat and infilled hands to allow you to see in the dark. For the Black Edition we've used a different compound to the other Coniston watches, to give an incredible vivid green glow.

Coniston Waters

Inspiration behind the name came from Coniston Waters in the Lake District, which is famed for the Campbell family's water speed record attempts. At 5 miles in length it was the perfect lake for Sir Malcolm Campbell to set a new record of 141.74 miles per hour in Bluebird K4 in 1939.

In the late 50's Sir Malcolm's son Donald went on to set four successive records on Coniston Waters in Bluebird K7. In 1967 Donald achieved a top speed of over 320 miles per hour on the return leg of a record-breaking attempt - he then lost control of Bluebird, which somersaulted and crashed. Campbell tragically lost his life.
