Morar - Emerald

  • It seemed only right that one timepiece within the Morar range should honour the verdant, varied life found on the banks of Loch, and the Emerald does just that. Inspired by both the clear, green depths of the Loch and the spectrum of greens found in the woodlands and mosses bordering the water’s edge, the vibrant dial is full of life. Perfectly captured within warm bronze casing, the dial is subtly sand textured, a nod to the sea and loch-beds among which its wearers may find themselves.

The dial markings are inspired by the shape of shells. The cardinal points all reference bi-valve shells, with the “12” marking being a slightly different shape that is repeated on the bezel pip for continuity. Around the dial you’ll see the deeply engraved bezel showing a 60-minute countdown timer, which can be rotated to the minute hand, giving a 60-minute window of reference.

With anti-magnetic protection, the ability to withstand depths of 310 metres, carefully-engineered crown and case design and exceptional readability, the Morar is the perfect choice both for diving enthusiasts and those more comfortable on land who simply want a long-lasting, durable, and unique dive watch.

The Spirit of the Loch

Loch Morar is situated on the North Western coast of Lochaber in the West Highlands and is a stone’s throw away from Mallaig; the main port for the small isles and Skye. The loch itself is incredibly long and vastly deep, fed with fresh water from the mountains that surround it.

One inhabitant has traversed the ages and remains to this day a mystery; Morag, as she’s affectionately known, is said to have lived in this loch for centuries. It is said that Morag is around 30 feet long, with rough skin and three dorsal humps, and we can’t help but be enamoured by this creature of folklore. So much so we placed her on our caseback.

If At First You Don't Succeed...

When we set out on our journey with MWC, we always knew one day we would design and produce a diver’s watch, and when that time came we wanted it to be as unique and individual as we could possibly make it. The dive watch arena is the most crowded place in watch land, and there’s little to differentiate between many of them, save some branding, marginal technical specifications and fancy materials.

The time for our dive watch project arrived in mid-2016, with a quick sketch of a rounded, pebble-like form with integrated bezel and curved lugs. This sparked the beginning of what would become a project spanning the course of 3 years, flitting from impossible problem solving to finally shelving the Morar whilst we focused on other projects.

However, in November 2018 the Morar project roared back to life after deciding, for the first time in MWC’s short history, to use an automatic movement as the engine. This would solve many of our historical woes with the project and allow us to bring the Morar to market more resolved than originally designed; a by-product of our countless hours of discussion, production cycles and technical hurdles emanating from our other projects.

As a result, the watch you see before you today is beyond even our expectations. It’s the result of the desire to create something that followed no preordained plan, that complied with no preset expectation of dive watch design nor compromised any element for aesthetic or vanity reason.

The Beating Heart

The Morar is powered by the Miyota 9039. This movement, a low-hand-height version of the legendary 9015, has been used to keep the Morar as thin as possible. It features a glorious 28,800bph smooth hand sweep, can be hacked for precise time synchronisation and has the ability to be manually wound.

It’s an astounding movement and one that makes the Morar a superb time-keeper, and one that has a quality, reliable heart to keep it going for generations to come.

The Devil's in the Detail

The dial surface features a sand texture, a nod to the sea-bed and has a radially brushed ring around the outside, with more accurate minute markings. The MWC logo is raised off the sand, and the “310” logo is a beautifully domed, glossy bubble that catches reflections.

Numbers with Meaning

The Morar comes engraved with sequential numbering, so you know exactly which Morar you have. You can either select your number above, or if you would like to enquire into a specific number please don't hesitate to ask.

Fear of the Dark

The hour markings of the Morar mimic a simplified whorl shell. The biggest reason for these shapes was to give us the maximum real estate for luminous compound. Lume works on a density principle; the more of it there is, the brighter and more long-lasting it is. We wanted the best of both these features and so have created a multi-printed marking that lasts longer than any luminous compound we have seen.

We're proud to offer the Morar with a 12-month movement guarantee - if anything does go wrong we're on hand to repair or replace it for you.
