Coniston - Speed Edition

  • Special Edition of 500 Watches

"Sometimes a split second of time can be gained at the cost of a chance’" - words spoken by Sir Malcom Campbell; a seeker of speed, of thrills and records, of chasing and capturing glory that previously seemed just out of reach. The Coniston is inspired by its namesake lake, where Sir Malcolm Campbell set a world water-speed record.

Taking its colour scheme from Malcolm's boat, the Speed Edition is a nod to the unwavering spirit that he displayed throughout his life. With a red-tipped second hand echoing the splash of red in both the Union Jack and Swiss flags that adorned the K3, the Speed Edition immediately catches the eye. The pale blue dial, set within its iconic Blue Bird blue outer ring, makes it clear that the Speed Edition is a close relative of the Coniston Bluebird; just as Malcolm was the father of Donald, the Coniston Speed Edition shares a very special connection with the Coniston Bluebird.

The inifinity symbol on the dial of the Speed Edition replicates the same symbol which appeared on the badge of the K3; a mark of the hydroplane’s official status as a water speed record competitor, and of their unlimited and infinite power. The infinity symbol holds a special meaning in the case of the Campbell family; the lives of both Campbell father and son, infinitely bound together in their pursuit of speed.

A Visual Spectacle

We believe the rear of a watch should be as spectacular as the front, so the Coniston flaunts its oscillating balance wheel with a large glass aperture. The beating heart of the Coniston is the beautiful Miyota 8N33, which was selected not only for its reliability but also its delicate and eye-catching decorations.

Surrounding this visual spectacle is an engraving with the words of Sir Malcolm Campbell who set numerous land and water speed records during the 30s and 40s.

We started this project with a competition to name our next watch; little did we know it would result in a journey of such intrigue and excitement, through discovery of Sir Malcolm and Donald Campbells' incredible endeavour, to the challenges of bringing to market a watch that is fresh and unique, yet combines everything we've learned over the past 3 years.

The Beating Heart

For the Coniston we specified the Japanese Made Miyota 8N33 manual movement, and never looked back. This is one of the most beautiful calibers available, with a skeletonised frame revealing the inner workings of the movement, from the escapement wheel to the mainspring barrel, it’s all there on show.

Not only is the 8N33 a beautiful movement to look at, it’s also exceptionally reliable and accurate, running well within the manufacturer's spec. The movement beats at 21,600bph, giving an incredibly smooth sweep to the central seconds hand, as it tracks its way around the dial.

The Devil's in the Detail

The Coniston Speed Edition comes in our brand new watch box. A monolithic black cuboid opens up to reveal the beautifully crafted booklet, detailing how the Coniston came to be. Lifting the booklet reveals yet more; the letterpressed, hand-stamped collector's card sits within a precision cut recess and displays a quick reference guide on the reverse. The tray that holds the booklet and card can be removed revealing the Coniston below; don't forget to look on the underside of the tray, for it holds the phrase so deeply connected to MWC.

Inspiration behind the name came from Coniston Water in the Lake District, which is famed for the Campbell family's water speed record attempts.

Sir Malcolm Campbell regularly tested his Bluebird K3 boat on Coniston Water, and he went on to set his first - the first of four - water speed record in this specially commissioned hydroplane boat, on the Swiss Lake Maggiore on 1st September 1937.
