Dawn of the jet age

The dawn of a new age in flight. Faster, quieter, more luxurious, the jet-age brought about a sea-change in the way flight was perceived. It was the peak of social status and, if you were lucky enough to fly during the hey-day, an incredible experience. Technically these planes were a feat of British engineering marvel and signalled to the world that innovation was in our blood. The Pacific is inspired by both the dawn of the jet-age and the human-centric experience as this new super-fast lifestyle boomed into existence.

GOLDEN ERA OF TRAVEL

The Pacific collection is inspired by the dawn of the jet age - with each individual model paying homage to a particular era of jet travel.

The Pacific 55 celebrates the introduction and splendour of First Class jet travel. Grandeur was at the top of requirements; the human experience was more important as a way to sell this new, extravagant method of transport to the lucky few. The Golden Era of travel had begun. Flight crews and passengers dressed like the airplane was their runway. Champagne, cigars and caviar adorned the gilt menus, whilst leg-room was palatial by today's standards.

COMPLEX DESIGN

The challenge behind the Pacific was to create a watch that feels fluid, that exudes an effortless approach to a complex design. The Pacific features one unbroken compound curve, signifying flight, the high altitude smoothness and simplicity of jet travel. In contrast, the underside, much like the profile of a wing, is turbulent, a nod to airflow and the engineering of plane design.

The waveform line presented its own challenge: to keep the watch feeling thin and comfortable on the wrist - hence the smoothed scallops that have been scooped out at each corner of the caseback; visually it keeps things trim on the wrist and physically comfortable.

THE BEATING HEART

Despite the incredible effort that was poured into the design of jet-liners, underneath the glossy thermoplastic and faux-leather sits a decidedly utilitarian framework of cabling and mechanics. Look up into a wheel-well of an airliner and you’ll not see anything decorated or highlighted - it’s all business.

We’ve taken this aesthetic and applied it to our Pacific - you see the engine - the Sellita SW216 - through the beautifully domed sapphire crystal, itself casting refractions and illuminating the movement. We’ve added our crown icon in black and modified the plates with a vertical brushed texture - but the calibre remains decidedly robust, accurate and humble.

DEVIL'S IN THE DETAIL

The Pacific is all about the detail - whether it's the fluid tri-finish case, elegant applied indices around the dial, the gentle sweeping hairline seconds hand, or the incredible sapphire box crystal with the most stunning refractions, you'll never get bored of checking the time.

The 55 celebrates a beautiful gold pallet that harks back to the gold watches of the 50s and 60s. The dial features a two-tone bubble dial with polished gold applied markings which fall off the edge of the dial's curvature - a magnificent visual treat.

Sweating The Small Stuff

The Pacific comes in our bold, stark watch box - a monolithic black cuboid opens up to reveal the beautifully crafted, bespoke booklet, detailing how the Pacific came to be. Lifting the booklet reveals yet more; the letterpressed, hand-stamped collector's card sits within a precision cut recess and features a quick reference guide on the reverse. The tray that holds the booklet and card can be removed with the black ribbon revealing the Pacific below; don't forget to look on the underside of the tray, for it holds the motto permeating through all of MWC.

HOW MARLOE BECAME AN ESTABLISHED BRITISH BRAND

In 2015, a simple twist of fate brought together the two founders of Marloe Watch Company. Oliver & Gordon were intrigued by design, the slow-living counter culture, and beautiful mechanical watches - within a year, the first Marloe watch was created, and Marloe Watch Company was born.

Marloe design watches that they’re proud of, made by manufacturing partners who over the years have also become friends. Honest watches made with care and attention - unpretentious, proven quality.
