There is something curious about September.
For all the attention we give to New Year's resolutions and fresh starts in January, it's often the arrival of September that feels like the true beginning of a new chapter. The long days begin to shorten, routines return, and after a season of holidays, adventures and family time, our focus gradually turns back towards the projects waiting patiently on our desks.
Like many families across the country, much of the Marloe team has spent the last week waving children off through school gates once again. New classrooms, new teachers, freshly labelled uniforms and, in at least one case, a parent quietly wondering where the years have gone.
The return to school always feels significant, not just for the children but for the adults too. It marks the end of one season and the beginning of another. Summer offers a rare opportunity to step away from routine, while September invites us to return with fresh perspective and renewed energy.
And so, as classrooms fill once again, so too does our HQ.
The months leading up to summer are often some of our busiest. Product development, production planning, customer visits, events and day-to-day operations have a habit of generating a seemingly endless list of ideas and projects. Some move quickly, others require patience, but many are deliberately set aside during the summer months while we focus on family commitments and well-earned breaks.
Returning in September gives us the opportunity to revisit those same projects with fresh eyes.
It's remarkable how often a challenge that seemed complex in June suddenly appears far more straightforward after a few weeks away. New ideas emerge. Old assumptions get questioned. Solutions appear where previously there were only obstacles.
That sense of renewal is something we try to embrace every year.
Looking Ahead
One of the most enjoyable aspects of returning after summer is taking stock of everything that's quietly been progressing behind the scenes.
Our product development pipeline remains as active as ever, with several future projects currently moving through various stages of design and testing.
Recently we've been reviewing a number of 3D-printed case prototypes, allowing us to assess proportions, ergonomics and visual balance before committing to production tooling.
It's one thing to view a design on a screen and quite another to hold it in your hand. The transition from sketchbook to physical object is one of our favourite stages of development. Tiny adjustments measured in fractions of a millimetre can completely alter the character of a watch, and these prototypes allow us to refine every detail before moving forward.
Some concepts progress rapidly. Others spend months evolving and maturing before they're ready for release. While we're not quite ready to reveal everything that's waiting in the wings, we're genuinely excited about what's beginning to take shape.
The coming months should be particularly interesting.
A Special Project
Alongside our ongoing development work, we've also recently spent time working on a project involving some very special guests.
At this stage we're obliged to remain frustratingly vague, but it's one of those collaborations that immediately had the entire team excited from the moment the first conversations began.
Like many of our favourite projects, it sits at the intersection of storytelling, shared passions and celebrating people whose work we genuinely admire.
For now, we'll leave that there.
Suffice to say that more will be revealed very soon, and we're looking forward to sharing the details in due course.
A Milestone Worth Celebrating
While much of our focus is naturally directed toward what's next, it's equally important to occasionally pause and reflect on how far we've come.
This summer saw the announcement of our Watchmaker Edition.
Limited to just five pieces, every watch quickly found a new home, and we'd like to extend our sincere thanks to those who secured one, and those who took part in our prize draw.
The Watchmaker Edition represents far more than a limited release.
For us, it marks a significant milestone in the Marloe story.
Over the last decade we've steadily developed our capabilities, expanded our understanding of the craft and continued to invest in the skills and infrastructure needed to build increasingly ambitious watches. The Watchmaker Edition reflects years of learning, experimentation and persistence.
Many of the watches we create celebrate places, stories and adventures. The Watchmaker Edition celebrates something slightly different: the craft itself.
More importantly, it provides encouragement to continue pushing ourselves further in the years ahead.
Returning to Full Speed
September also marks a return to full production capacity within our assembly operation.
While summer inevitably brings holidays and staggered schedules, the months ahead represent the busiest period of the year for both watchmaking and fulfilment.
With autumn underway and Christmas rapidly approaching, activity within the workshop begins to increase considerably.
Our assembly schedule is now returning to full strength, with watches moving steadily through assembly, inspection, regulation, and final testing before making their way onto wrists around the world.
There's a unique rhythm to this time of year.
Trays begin to fill. Deliveries become more frequent. Workbenches become busier. New watches take shape piece by piece. For a small independent company, it's an exciting period and one we genuinely look forward to every year.
While the festive season may still feel some distance away, experience has taught us that it arrives surprisingly quickly.
We're ready for it.
Onward and Upward
When we first started Marloe, one of the things we enjoyed most was the feeling that there was always another challenge waiting just over the horizon. Another skill to learn. Another watch to create. Another story to tell.
A decade later, that feeling hasn't disappeared.
If anything, it's become stronger.
Perhaps that's another reason September feels so meaningful. It reminds us that progress rarely happens in a straight line. Sometimes the most productive thing we can do is pause, step away for a few weeks and return with a clearer perspective.
The watches we're developing today will eventually become the launches we'll be discussing in months and years to come. The ideas sitting in notebooks will become prototypes. Prototypes will become finished watches. Conversations will become collaborations.
It's an endlessly rewarding process.
As we move into the final months of the year, we're feeling energised, optimistic and grateful for the support of our customers, collectors and friends who continue to accompany us on the journey.
There is much still to come.
New projects. New challenges. New stories.
School is back. The workshop is full once again. The kettle is on.
And after a refreshing summer, we're ready to get back to work.
