RECORD BREAKER

On the 17th July, 1964, Donald Campbell powered his way to 403.1mph on the bed of Lake Eyre, Australia, in his Proteus Bluebird CN7.

The Devil's In The Detail

There’s something really enchanting about the deep blue of the dial, coupled with the pop of yellow accents and silver-white trims that just sing in a watch face design. It almost does the work for us and in adapting the original design, we thought that it was time to celebrate another of Donald’s speed machines, the Bluebird-Proteus CN7 - a gas turbine-powered car that secured him the World Land Speed Record in 1964.

We’ve improved the contrast of the chapter ring’s minute track, added in some metallic texture and a subtle dark ring around the central plateau - all in the mission to delicately enhance the design. The dynamic depth is retained through the use of a multi-part dial construction and applied indices extending outwards over the moat of lume.

DIAL DETAILS

Iteration. Improvement. The Coniston Automatic dial has been improved in almost every facet, subtly, deftly, to bring a greater sense of theatre - polished chamfers, two-tone bezel and central plateau, brushed textures and polished batons do the job.

Knurling

Knurling is a mechanical texture deployed in motorsport on important switchgear to make sure it's a positive experience. We've used that as inspiration for the bezel outer in a nod to the Coniston's motorsport inspiration.

Flowing Design

Re-designed completely for the Automatic era, the Coniston's case features a three-phase sectioning - the top has the knurled ring, followed by a flowing, beautifully formed light-catching strip leading smoothly into the lugs, and a final aggressively angled case-back, to nestle into the wrist.

BEATING HEART

For this new and improved Coniston we've turned to an automatic movement - the Miyota 8N24. It's a direct descendent of the 8N33 that featured in our manual Coniston, and features the same beautiful skeletonised structure, but with improved functionality; hacking seconds and hand-winding capabilities.

LUME

Continuing the iconic luminous capabilities of its predecessor, the Coniston Auto features a moat of lume around the periphery of the dial, and the same segmented hands, overlapping to create one glowing superhand.

My latest acquisition to a rapidly expanding collection of watches from probably the UK’s fastest growing, interesting and creative brands, Marloe Watch Company. Great to be part of the journey.

Even better in the flesh. The guys have done a great job with their photography, but until you see (and feel) this watch in the flesh you can't really understand how unbelievable it is.

Couldn’t be happier with my purchase, been wanting one for a while now and finally got one. Amazing build quality and attention to detail. Feels like a very premium product.

Iterate. Improve.

The Coniston always was a handsome fellow, with incredible dynamism of dial design and beautifully bespoke features - hands that resemble structural cross-sections, a glowing moat of illumination and striking refractions from the domed crystal.

We’ve had a lot of great feedback over the years following the launch of the Coniston, with much of the positivity focused on the dial and hand set, as well as the magically deep dial design that your eye can get lost in.

It would have been sacrilege to ignore these elements when reconsidering the design for Coniston Auto, so we’ve tweaked them ever so slightly, with delicacy and perspective, to make them just that wee bit more resolved.

Strength Personified

The Coniston Automatic has increased slightly in diameter and thickness. Now operating at 41mm, the wrist presence is as powerful, and the downward sloping lugs keeps universal wearability intact. At 11.1mm thick the Coniston, with its gilt rotor and incredible dial depth, is an unobtrusive, daily wearer.
