Coniston - Bluebird

Serial Number
  • "Courage is not being fearless"

Words spoken whilst pushing the boundaries of physics and speed, Donald Campbell was no stranger to life-endangering challenges of extreme engineering. The Coniston Collection is inspired by it's namesake lake where Donald and Sir Malcolm Campbell set numerous water-speed records.

After the Coniston was voted winner of our Naming Competition, we began a journey of discovery through the history of the Lake and what happened on it. The name Coniston has become synonymous with the Bluebird K7, Donald Campbell’s speed records and his fateful end. To honour this remarkable journey we’ve had, Lake Coniston and the iconic man, we created a watch that reflected Bluebird’s distinctive colour scheme. We’ve used a blue similar to the shade found on Bluebird K7 and, along with yellow accents found on the Bluebird’s badge and intake covers, used the same yellow as an accent on the Coniston Bluebird timepiece. Paired with a dark cognac leather strap, the Coniston Bluebird immediately evokes that bygone era of engineering prowess and looks, to our humble eyes anyway, the most distinctive of the Coniston collection.

You can see the rest of the Coniston range here.

The Beating Heart

We believe the rear of a watch should be as spectacular as the front, so the Coniston flaunts it's oscillating balance wheel with a large glass aperture. We use hand-wound mechanical movements in all our timepieces, and the beating heart of the Coniston is the beautiful Miyota 8N33, which was selected not only for its reliability but also its delicate and eye-catching decorations.

Surrounding this visual spectacle is an engraving with the words of British engineer Donald Campbell - who along with his father Malcolm, set numerous land and water speed records between 1924 to 1967.

Courage is not being fearless.

We started this project with a competition to name our next watch; little did we know it would result in a journey of such intrigue and excitement, through discovery of the Bluebird K7 and Campbell's fateful end, to the challenges of bringing to market a watch that is fresh and unique, yet combines everything we've learned over the past 3 years.

In developing the Coniston we have taken the best bits from our preceding four designs and brought them all together in our new flagship collection.

The Devil's in the Detail

The Coniston Bluebird box is somewhat of a departure from our other watch-boxes. Taking colour cues from Bluebird itself, the box comes in Adriatic Blue with a Citrine Yellow belly band, and it is very eye catching - I think you'll agree. What better way to celebrate such an incredible piece of British engineering.

Numbers with Meaning

The Coniston comes engraved with sequential numbering, so you know exactly which Coniston you have. We ship the earliest number available, but if you would like to enquire into a specific number please don't hesitate to ask.
Donald Campbell in Bluebird K7

Inspiration behind the name came from Coniston Waters in the Lake District, which is famed for the Campbell family's water speed record attempts. At 5 miles in length it was the perfect lake for Sir Malcolm Campbell to set a new record of 141.74 miles per hour in Bluebird K4 in 1939.

Between 1956 and 1959 Sir Malcolm's son Donald went on to set four successive records on Coniston Waters in Bluebird K7. In 1967 Donald achieved a top speed of over 320 miles per hour on the return leg of a record-breaking attempt - he then lost control of Bluebird, which somersaulted and crashed. Campbell sadly lost his life.
