Coniston - Vulcan

  • "Courage is not being fearless" - words spoken while pushing and breaking the boundaries of physics and human endeavour. Donald Campbell was no stranger to challenges of extreme engineering and danger. The Coniston is inspired by its namesake lake, where Donald and his father Sir Malcolm Campbell set numerous water-speed records.

The Coniston Vulcan is a chimera of engineering inspiration; the body of the Coniston, with the markings of the Avro Vulcan jet. Royal Air Force Grey alters with the light and with each movement of the wrist, switching from stormy grey to blue skies under the sapphire crystal. The striking turquoise second hand, logo and painted markers on the outer rehaut provide a pop of contrast, all tied together with polished applied indices and hands.

A ring of Superluminova, sunken between the outer rehaut and the central plateau, provides a welcome break from the norm; using negative space and working with the lume-tipped hands to show the passing of time after dark.

By Your Side

The Coniston is a contemporary take on a classic - powered by a manual, hand-wound movement, winding your Coniston becomes part of your daily routine, your touch powering its engine for the day ahead. So whether you're adventuring into the great outdoors, or outdoors planning your next great adventure, your Coniston will be by your side.

A Visual Spectacle

We believe the rear of a watch should be as spectacular as the front, so the Coniston flaunts its oscillating balance wheel with a large glass aperture. We use hand-wound mechanical movements in all our timepieces, and the beating heart of the Coniston is the beautiful Miyota 8N33, which was selected not only for its reliability but also its delicate and eye-catching decorations.

Surrounding this visual spectacle is an engraving with the words of British icon Donald Campbell - who along with his father Malcolm, set numerous land and water speed records between 1924 to 1967.

The Devil's in the Detail

The Coniston is designed to be worn every day. The case is sized at 40mm which, coupled with the edge-to-edge dial, wears small but reads big. The dial takes design cues from all of our preceding watches, bringing them together to form a cohesive and striking dial, filled with dynamic level changes, angles and depth.

The Beating Heart

For the Coniston we specified the Japanese Made Miyota 8N33 manual movement, and never looked back. This is one of the most beautiful calibers available, with a skeletonised frame revealing the inner workings of the movement, from the escapement wheel to the mainspring barrel, it’s all there on show.

Not only is the 8N33 a beautiful movement to look at, it’s also exceptionally reliable and accurate, running well within the manufacturer's spec. The movement beats at 21,600bph, giving an incredibly smooth sweep to the central seconds hand, as it tracks its way around the dial.

Inspiration behind the name came from Coniston Water in the Lake District, which is famed for the Campbell family's water speed record attempts.

In 1967 Donald Campbell achieved a top speed of over 320 miles per hour on the return leg of a record-breaking attempt - he then lost control of Bluebird, which somersaulted and crashed. Campbell sadly lost his life.

Sweeting The Small Stuff

The Coniston Vulcan comes in our brand new watch box. A monolithic black cuboid opens up to reveal the beautifully crafted booklet, detailing how the Coniston came to be. Lifting the booklet reveals yet more; the letterpressed, hand-stamped collector's card sits within a precision cut recess and displays a quick reference guide on the reverse. The tray that holds the booklet and card can be removed revealing the Coniston below; don't forget to look on the underside of the tray, for it holds the phrase so deeply connected to MWC.
